In Vienna's 11th district, many new apartments were created, making a new school building necessary. The VS+NMS Bürgerspitalwiese School offers space for 825 students.
In this "light-footed building", architecture and structural engineering converge: High-load, slender columns were used to meet the architectural requirements for the structural design. To ensure that the columns in the centrally located circulation areas did not represent an obstacle, it was necessary to achieve the slimmest possible column cross-section in the structural design. Therefore, ATLANT® Strong composite columns were used instead of reinforced concrete columns. With these composite columns, the R90 requirement for fire resistance was achieved.
Due to the slenderness of the columns, the connections and stabilization of the columns had to be designed with special attention when penetrating the slabs. The connection points and load transmission through the ceilings were manufactured by Peikko with custom-made steel components. In some cases these connection elements were integrally formed as part of the multi-storey composite columns, in other cases they were connected to them on site. The MODIX® threaded rebar coupling system was used to anchor the connections with the reinforcement in the foundation and slabs.
